France international defender Eliaquim Mangala will spend the remainder of the 2017/18 campaign with the Blues after completing a loan move from Premier League leaders Manchester City on January transfer deadline day.

The 26-year-old has won three league titles in two countries and was an instrumental figure in the City team which reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2016.

Mangala has been capped eight times by France and was part of his country’s squad at both the 2014 World Cup and 2016 European Championship finals.

He made his professional debut as a 17-year-old with Standard Liege in December 2008 and won the league title in his first season with the Belgian club.

Mangala was playing regular Champions League football before his 19th birthday and scored in Standard’s Belgian Cup final victory over Westerlo in 2011 on what proved to be his farewell appearance for the club before joining Portuguese giants FC Porto.

The athletic centre-half was a key cog in the Porto side which pieced together an unbeaten 2012/13 league campaign and conceded only 14 goals on the way to retaining its domestic crown – Mangala’s second title success in Portugal.

A star of Porto’s 2013/14 run to the Europa League quarter-finals, he was bought by Manchester City in August 2014 and has played 79 matches for the club.

The left-sided centre-back – who played 30 times in La Liga on loan with Valencia last season – has operated under a number of distinguished bosses in his career, notably serial-winner Guardiola and France coach Didier Deschamps.
