Everton secured the signing of Costa Rica international Bryan Oviedo on deadline day in August 2012.

Oviedo, a versatile left-sided player who can operate both in defence and midfield, joined from Danish side FC Copenhagen for an undisclosed fee.

He signed a four-year contract at Everton, a deal which has since been extended to the summer of 2019.

A popular player on the terraces, Oviedo famously scored the goal which ended the Blues’ 21-year wait for a win at Old Trafford in December 2013.

Oviedo played for Deportivo Saprissa in his home country before being spotted playing for Costa Rica's Under-20s in the 2009 World Cup.

His performances there caught the eye of Copenhagen scouts and he switched to the Danish capital in January 2010. They loaned him out to FC Nordsjaelland for the 2010/11 season, where he won the Danish Cup.

The following season he was back with his parent club and became a regular starter, helping them win the same competition.

By this time he had become a senior international, making his debut in a 3-2 defeat to Argentina. His first international goal came in February 2010 against Columbia.

Oviedo had racked up 13 caps when he switched to Everton.

He made his Everton debut as a substitute away at Swansea City in September 2012 but found appearances limited due to the form of fellow left-sided players Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar.

After an impressive pre-season in 2013, Oviedo made his first start in the Capital One Cup tie against Stevenage on 28 August.

He quickly became a fan favourite and further elevated his status by giving Evertonians some early Christmas cheer that year with his famous winner at Old Trafford.

A strike against Stoke City would follow the next week, but disaster struck in January.

His 13th appearance of the season involved a horrific double leg-break at Stevenage. And despite making remarkable progress in recovery, Oviedo would narrowly miss out on a place in the Costa Rica squad for the World Cup.

Oviedo's injury problems - including the removal of pins from his leg - continued throughout 2014/15 and he made just 11 appearances in all competitions.

The 2015/16 campaign saw Oviedo play 19 times - his highest total to date in a single season since joining Everton.

He had no hesitation in putting pen-to-paper on a new three-and-a-half year deal in February 2016.

Contracted until: June 2019.
