  • Birthplace: Liverpool

  • Terry Darracott admits his heart will forever be based at Goodison.

"I do go on about Everton because it's a massive part of my life," he recalled. "I've worked with Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness, who are great Liverpudlians, and I think sometimes they look and think 'oh shut up will you!' If people want to talk about Everton then I'll talk about Everton until I'm blue in the face!

"Progressing from schoolboy football all the way through to the first team of your hometown club was (and still is) every young boy's dream and Terry chose Everton ahead of Liverpool when he was starting out.

"I'm from Edge Hill and I opted to sign for Everton although I had the opportunity to sign for Liverpool at the same time," he recalled. "I was persuaded by the fact that Everton's youth policy at the time was really thriving. Harry Catterick was never afraid to put a young player in the side if he thought he warranted it. It was proved right in my case. Look at me - I made the right decision, I've no regrets and look back on it with a lot of pride."

Terry played 178 matches for Everton, without scoring a goal, before moving on to enjoy spells at Wrexham and Tulsa Roughnecks. However, he returned to Goodison to become part of the coaching staff and he was a vital component in the backroom team that guided Everton through the halcyon days of the mid-80s. That side was packed full of real characters and Terry loved it. He told us one of his favourite stories from that golden era.

"It's true that I got into a taxi with the name of the team hotel printed on my head!" he grinned. "It was Andy Gray who did that! Howard Kendall had won the manager of the year award and we were up in Glasgow for the celebration and presentation that they had. After the 'do' we decided to go out for a meal. We'd all had a few drinks and Andy Gray, who obviously knew Glasgow well, said to me, 'Listen, you're in my city now, it's my rules'. He said that we were going down by the docks to a Chinese restaurant. We were stood at the reception waiting for taxis and he picked up an inked rubber stamp of the hotel from the desk and stamped it on my head and said, 'That's just in case you get lost!'"

As a player and a coach at his beloved Everton, Terry Darracott experienced the highs and the lows...but he thoroughly enjoyed his time here and retained his renowned sense of humour throughout it all!

"I spent thirteen years there as a player and five years on the staff, so overall I had 18 years at Everton," he said. "There's good times and bad times and through the bad times you have certain ways of coming round and getting out of them and I liked a laugh and a joke. I was serious when I worked but in the meantime I would like a laugh and a joke with whoever I was with, that's the kind of fellow I am."

Terry coached at Blackburn and Wrexham before moving into scouting for Bolton Wanderers.
