A former England Under-19 captain, Steven's career began at Netherton as an Academy scholar.

He signed a professional contract with the Club but found regular first-team opportunities limited and after loan spells at Oldham and Carlisle, the midfielder joined Bradford City on a permanent basis in 2004.

The midfielder appeared over 130 times for the Valley Parade outfit, scoring 15 times before switching to Crewe Alexandra in May 2007.

He spent three years with the Railwaymen before joining Bury in July 2010.
