Steve joined the Blues after a short spell at Aston Villa. He made his name at Newcastle United, where he was part of the side that, under Kevin Keegan, nearly clinched the Premiership crown in 1996.
The North Shields-born star became the youngest man to play for Newcastle when, at the tender age of 16 years and 223 days, he made his first team debut in a Second Division match at Wolves in November 1990.
Steve joined the Toffees in the summer of 2000 for a fee of £2.5 million and played over 100 times.
During his time at Goodison Steve operated in a number of positions including, right-back, centre-half, centre-midfield, right-wing and was even been deployed as an emergency striker!
After five years on Merseyside, he joined West Brom on a free transfer and in 2007 signed for Sheffield Wednesday.
Steve is now a coach at Huddersfield Town.
