Nuno Valente arrived at Goodison Park from Porto days before the transfer window closed in August 2005.
An experienced defender who has represented his country on many occasions, Valente was in the Portugal side who lost 1-0 to Greece in the Euro 2004 final.
A Champions League winner in 2004, he played under Jose Mourinho whilst at Estadio do Dragao and the former Chelsea manager spoke to David Moyes ahead of his transfer, highly recommending him.
Brought in to cover the void left by the injured Alessandro Pistone, Valente signed a three-year deal on Merseyside.
He was a key cog in the FC Porto side with his powerful approach as a tough-tackling attacking full-back.
Noted for the quality of his crossing and the venom of his shot, Valente was a late arrival to international football.
He first appeared for Portugal against England in September 2002 at the age of 27. His impressive showings for Porto subsequently made him a regular under Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Injury sidelined him for the first few months of the 2005/6 season but he returned to the international fold in the March of 2006.
He improved rapidly at Everton and after a further injury in 2006, he played in the last game of the season. He then soon received his World Cup squad call from Portugal and jetted off to Germany.
Valente's second season was blighted by injury and he barely featured after Christmas with a succession of niggling problems. But Everton were sufficiently impressed to take up an option of an additional year on Valente's contract keeping him at the Club until the summer of 2008.
The Portuguese again endured a disjointed campaign in 2007/08, but was able to feature in the 7-1 win over Sunderland and the 2-0 win in Nurnberg.
Everton's faith in the experience of the full-back was highlighted when they activated a one-year extension to Valente's contract that will keep him at Goodison until summer 2009.
But sadly after a handful of appearances at the start of the season, injury struck. Valente required knee surgery and didn't feature after October.
His time at Everton ended when his contract expired in the summer of 2009 and he subsequently announced his retirement from the playing side of the game.
Nuno is now a scout.
