Matteo Ferrari arrived at Goodison on a season-long loan from Serie A giants Roma.
Born in Algeria to an Italian father and Guinean mother, Ferrari enjoyed a long and distinguished career in various Italian youth sides, which peaked with victory against the Czech Republic in the final of the 2000 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He made his full international debut in a 1-1 draw against Turkey in November 2002.
Ferrari began his career at Inter Milan but was subsequently loaned to Genoa 1893, US Lecce and Bari - where he played 26 matches in Serie A in the 1999/00 campaign - to further his development.
He returned to the San Siro to force his way into the reckoning but was soon on the move again, joining Parma on loan during 2001/02 and doing well enough to secure a permanent deal.
Ferrari established himself as one of Serie A's most consistent performers and in July 2004 he moved to AS Roma for an undisclosed fee, which included 19-year-old defender Damiano Ferronetti going to Parma in part-exchange.
However, the defender never truly settled at The Stadio Olimpico and made the switch, on a loan basis initially, on August 26th 2005.
The loan did not go well for Ferrari, who was blighted by injuries and, as a result, started just six matches. He returned to Italy in the summer of 2006, with the Blues not taking up the option of signing the player permanently.
He was instead snapped up by Genoa but spent just one season at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris before linking up with Turkish powerhouses Besiktas.
In February 2012, Matteo moved to Canada to sign on with Montreal Impact ahead of their inaugural MLS campaign.
