Portuguese international Manuel Fernandes joined Everton for the second time in January 2008.
Fernandes agreed a six-month loan deal with the Blues, having completed a similar stint 12 months previously.
For his first transfer, Everton were able to agree a deal with Benfica and acquired the necessary clearance from the Premier League just in time for the midfielder to arrive on a six-month loan deal in the January transfer window in 2007.
Highly thought of throughout Europe, he progressed through the youth system at Benfica, making his debut in the 2003/4 season.
Fernandes, who was still only 20 when he arrived at Goodison, has played at every level for Portugal, from under 15s right up to the full squad.
He even notched an international goal against Canada in 2005 and was involved in both of Benfica's Champions League victories over Liverpool that season.
In the summer of 2006 he agreed a deal to join Portsmouth, initially on loan. He went on to make 12 appearances for Pompey, scoring in the Carling Cup win over Mansfield.
But he departed the south coast side in January after they raised questions over the potential transfer fee that would make the deal permanent.
He proved a hit with fans at Goodison despite illness and injury restricting his appearances. He scored two goals including a spectacular effort against Manchester United and provided moments of flair to savour - most notably in the 1-0 win over Arsenal.
Fernandes left Goodison at the end of his loan and joined Valencia, but his stay at the Mestalla was an unhappy one and he was able to rejoin Everton in January 2008.
Lacking match fitness, the talented Portuguese initially struggled to reach his best form. But as the season continued he rapidly improved and turned in some classy displays, most notably against Derby and Newcastle.
Rumours of a permanent move to Merseyside ensued in the summer, but Fernandes returned to parent club Valencia where he has regained a position in the first team reckoning.
In December 2010, Manuel joined Turkish outfit Besiktas on a loan deal which was eventually made permanent the following summer.
