Teenager John joined Everton on transfer deadline day in January 2013, penning a five-and-a-half year deal.
A right-back, he arrived at Goodison Park from hometown club Barnsley for an undisclosed fee.
John came through the ranks at Oakwell before signing his first pro deal in December 2011.
The following March, aged just 17, he was thrown in for a first-team debut against Reading and went on to make 28 appearances for the Tykes, scoring one goal.
He has also been recognised at international level, turning out for England's Under-19 side.
Stones made 12 appearances for the Under 21s side last season and was among five Everton players named as a member of the England Under 20 World Cup squad.
He then impressed under Roberto Martinez during pre-season ahead of the 2013/14 campaign, scoring an impudent chipped penalty in the shootout win over Juventus.
He subsequently made his Everton debut in the Capital One Cup win over Stevenage in August.
After Christmas, Stones grasped the opportunity to deputise for Phil Jagielka in central defence and turned in a string of eye-catching performances.
His breakthrough was so significant that Roy Hodgson called him up as a standby player for the World Cup in Brazil.
