Anders Limpar

Midfielder

Anders Limpar
  • Born: 24/09/1965
  • Birthplace: Solna, Sweden
  • Nationality: Swedish
  • Debut: 26/03/1994 v Tottenham (H)
  • Anders Limpar was the enigmatic winger signed by Mike Walker on transfer deadline day in March 1994.

The talented Swede cost £1.7m from Arsenal in a move that delighted Evertonians. Limpar, they hoped, would be the creative force the Blues so desperately required.

However, his 'honeymoon period' was relatively short.

Booed by the Gwladys Street faithful on his debut against Tottenham Hotspur, Limpar further felt the frustrations of the fans two months later when he gave away a penalty in the Wimbledon game of May 1994.

Limpar made amends by winning a penalty with a "semi-dive" later in the game, as the Blues escaped relegation in dramatic circumstances.

Twleve months later, Limpar flourished under the tutelage of Joe Royle and Willie Donachie.

An important player in the Blues' FA Cup run of that season, Limpar found himself with an FA Cup winners' medal - in a period he describes as: "The happiest time of my life as footballer."

But just eighteen months later, Limpar found himself out of Goodison following a dip in form and a well-publicised spat with Joe Royle.

He was transferred to Birmingham City for just £100,000 in January 1997.

From Birmingham, Limpar returned to Sweden with AIK Solna, before spending two seasons in America with Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids.

There followed another two years back in Sweden with Brommapojkarna - the club where he started his career and where he ended it after becoming involved in a controversial cross-city transfer.

"When I came back from America I trained with AIK but signed for Djurgrden, which is like going from Tottenham to Arsenal. There were threats to my family, they smashed up my sports bar, the 'Limp Bar' five or six times and even threatened my kids' teachers, so after four months I quit and joined Brommapojkarna."
