The Blues’ squad may have departed UK shores – but the focus amongst the players remains on the sporting scene back home.

The boredom of a two-hour wait at Manchester Airport was alleviated by talk of the British Open – and, inevitably, a sweep amongst the players and staff.

The selection of the golfers included in the sweep did not go down well with those members of the party who selected ‘outsiders’ and there was much hilarity as each member of the travelling party dipped into the basket.

“Chris Woods selected Baddeley,” was welcomed with laughter when it was announced at Manchester.

And the goalkeeping coach’s mood did not improve when he learned of his man’s score.

There were also whispers of a fix when manager David Moyes picked Tiger Woods out of the hat – and first team coach Jimmy Lumsden followed him by picking Colin Montgomerie.

The good-natured banter is sure to continue over the next three days as the squad keeps tabs on events at Carnoustie – with the best-placed player having the pleasure of taking all the money in the pot from the sweep.
