View articlesEverton Kitman Jimmy Martin has won the Open!
The British Open, played at Carnoustie in Scotland may have been claimed in dramatic fashion by Padraig Harrington but Jimmy was celebrating every bit as much as the Irishman.
Jimmy had pulled Harrington’s name out of the hat when the Everton party arranged a pre-Open sweepstake at Manchester Airport prior to flying out to the USA.
However, it was a close-run thing with another Jimmy over here in Los Angeles – first-team coach Jimmy Lumsden had Sergio Garcia.
The two were on tenterhooks at Salt Lake Airport as news of the final holes of the final round from Carnoustie began to filter through.
There was a lot of banter amongst players and staff as Alan Stubbs relayed the news from back home that Garcia needed only to par the final hole to win the Open.
Jimmy Lumsden then rang home so that he could listen to the Spaniard ‘live’on his mobile phone!
He winced when the opportunity for an outright win was lost but clung to the hope that his man would triumph in the play-off.
The Everton flight to Los Angeles departed before the play-off began in Scotland but as soon as legally possible, Stubbsy found out the result and declared Jimmy Martin as the winner!
In typically sporting fashion, Martin then spent the subsequent coach journey to the team hotel mocking the gallant runner-up!
