Everton had to settle for a share of the spoils after a late Matt Holt own-goal handed the home side a point.
The Blues had finally secured a deserved lead four minutes from time when Lee Molyneux netted a sensational 25-yard goal.
That came at the end of a half in which the home side had dominated proceedings without finding the goals to back up their superiority.
Molyneux's strike looked to have been enough to win the game, but a hopeful ball forward from the home side in the dying seconds was mis-cued by Holt.
The ball looped over goalkeeper Thordur Ingason and into the net to the agony of the visitors.
