I was interested to see Sir Alex Ferguson's remarks this week about the number of players of different nationalities playing in the Champions League this year.
Sir Alex noted that there were more Scottish players registered for the competition than English ones!
I think this goes some way to highlighting why England aren't doing so well at the moment at national team level; there simply isn't the talent coming through.
In Scotland of late there has been more of an emphasis on homegrown players and I believe that is bearing fruit - you only have to look at how well Rangers and Celtic are doing in the Champions League and how the national team have been getting on recently.
The problem is that clubs are more keen to buy in from abroad than bring through their own young players.
Having said that, Everton's squad is quite well off for English or British players. We've done well recently and another club who are strong in that area, Manchester City, are doing well themselves now.
Speaking of foreign players, Everton start their Uefa Cup group stage campaign this week, though I must say I am not a fan of the current format.
I believe the fact that it is not a straight knockout competition does detract from the competition.
European cup competition is about getting the job done over two legs, but the current scenario means you can lose two games and still go through.
Nevertheless, I'll be fully behind the lads on Thursday and I hope you will too.
