Vaughan's Derby Return Off
Nigel Clough accepts the Blues striker is unlikely to re-sign for the Rams
James Vaughan
Nigel Clough has resigned himself to the fact that James Vaughan is unlikely return to Derby County in the January transfer window.
The Rams manager made no secret of his desire to re-sign the striker on loan after his first spell with the Championship side was cut short through injury.
"It is looking less and less likely the closer we get to the end of transfer window," Clough told the Derby Telegraph. "There doesn't seem to be any movement at Everton in terms of them bringing players in, so it could well be we miss out on him."
Vaughan played two games for Derby during his short stay there in September but returned to Finch Farm due to a knee injury. He has subsequently recovered and been a part of Everton’s current resurgent spell of form.
Speaking at the time Clough was hopeful the forward would return once his recovery was complete and has been in touch with David Moyes on a regular basis.
"We talked to Everton on Friday and every week we give them a call to see if anything has changed, which it hasn't at the moment,” he said.
"We are planning without James, as much as we would like him to come back."
At the start of this month, David Moyes made it clear he’d not consider sending Vaughan back out on loan, unless his could boost his squad numbers.
“James probably won't go back out on loan because of the shortage of players,” said the Blues boss. “If I am able to bring people in in the transfer window that could alter.
“At the moment James is in and around it so we will keep him here.”
Despite only making a couple of appearances during his short stay at Pride Park, Vaughan impressed the Derby manager with his talent and commitment.
"We think he can do a good job for us,” added Clough. “We saw enough in the two games he played to suggest he could," explained Clough. "He is scoring goals for Everton now, which proves the point.
"But you can understand Everton's position in all of this.
"We still haven't given up hope yet. Even if it goes past January 31, we can still take him a week into February on a three-month loan."

DAVE HUNTERNistelrooy till end of season would be interesting, as long as he fits into the team ethic, I am sure Nev could have a word if Moyes is interested, but I am not so sure he would take a huge drop in his wages!

andy mayi would rather keep vaughny . he is far better than beckford[if the paper talk is true] . beckford seems arrogant and has only done things in league 1 .its a no brainer vaughan any day . but at the end of the day I.M.W.T C.O.Y.B
Friday 22nd January 05:41 Report Commentlee thrieplandi would hate to see vaughan go as i think he is a very good understudy to saha and should be above the yak in the pecking order. not sure about r v n just due to his age cant really see him being a massive hit here but i could be wrong. doesnt look like moyes is interested anyway i think Pavlyuchenko would be a good loan if we could get him.

Mark LynchYes that one has baffled me too, i think it is only speculation tho to be honest, Moyes i am sure rates Vaughan he certainly knows his capabilities, he sent him to Derby to keep him fresh, as we had (at the time) a full compliment of strikers.... hey heres one to whet the appetite!!!! ANYONE FOR Ruud van Nistelrooy????? Hmmm now theres food for thought, and before you negative people start, look at what Moyes has done with King Louis ;^) COYB.....
Thursday 21st January 19:45 Report CommentDAVE HUNTERJust saw in 'What the papers say' that we may be off loading Vaughan to bring in Beckford from Leeds, I don't understand (if this paper talk is true) why we would get rid of a young experienced lad for a 26 year old with no experience at all. Beckford may turn out to be a genius and I will always trust moyes in his decisions, but could do with Vaughan staying.

Peter McCannI said on the website when James Vaughan first went to Derby that we needed to get him back to the club. Vaughny and players like him are the future of this great club. Since he has been back he has added pace and committment to the team and importantly scored vital goals for us. I can fully understand why Derby would want hime but he must stay at Everton. Lets try and play him more with someone alongside him. COYB

Wednesday 20th January 20:03 Report CommentJohn HauVaughan has been brilliant ever since he got back from injure, and with Saha the only other fit main-striker available to us, is not such a good time to let him go out on-loan. Birmingham would be a good game to start Vaughan, as we are playing 3 games this week, we could give Saha a rest, so he would be fully prepare for Sunderland & Wigan, and if we do need Saha we could always bring him on in the second half.
