UNSY: MASSIVE WIN
David Unsworth felt that Everton wanted the game more than Tottenham on Good Friday night and he has labelled the 3-1 victory as a 'massive' win for the club.
The result takes the Blues to within touching distance of Premiership safety and has given players and supporters alike a massive fillip going into the final six games of the campaign.
Unsworth was handed the captaincy by David Moyes and he repaid his boss for the faith shown in him by opening the scoring after 16 minutes before further goals from defensive colleagues Gary Naysmith and Joseph Yobo.
"That was a massive win," Unsy told evertonfc.com. "The manner in which we got beat against Newcastle I think it was a big, big result and a big performance on the night and we're delighted in the dressing room.
"First half, without a shadow of a doubt, it was the best we've played all season. We were getting back to what we did last year, at our best, closing down, work rate passing the ball, creating chances it was superb and defensively we kept it simple we cleared it we tackled and I'm delighted for everybody tonight.
"I think as soon as the first goal went in and especially when the second went in it calmed us all down. We knew how important it was. I think at the end of the day we wanted it more. We wanted that game more than anybody."
Unsworth now insists that Everton must produce a similar sort of performance at Leeds on Tuesday night and for the rest of the run-in to try and end the season in as high a position as possible.
Unsy added: "It's important that we carry it on for the final six games. We've got a big game against Leeds coming up.
"They're fighting for their lives, so we're going to have to show that sort of commitment again, but we go out every game to try and do that. But against Spurs in the first-half, it all just seemed to click.
"We've been playing quite well. We've been creating numerous chances. Our home form has been excellent throughout the season it's just away from home that we haven't picked up as many points as we did last year.
"But on the whole it was a big, big win for us tonight and hopefully we can hopefully win a few more games and push up the league as far as possible between now and the end of the season. It gives us a bit of breathing space."
