TOUCHING DISTANCE

by Scott McLeod | Thursday 27 March 2008, 08:40

David Moyes has relished guiding Everton to within touching distance of the top four with the finishing line of the Premier League campaign in sight.

But this weekend his Everton team have the opportunity to usurp local neighbours Liverpool and move into the coveted fourth position if they can secure a victory in the 207th Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Everton trail their local neighbours by just two points going into the contest, despite the gulf in spending power of the two clubs.

It is a chasm Moyes is determined to continue to bridge, and is savouring the fact his side go to Anfield in such an impressive league position.

He said: "For many years Everton haven’t really been able to compete as closely as we’d like but we are now on the shoulders of Liverpool and a couple of other teams and we have got to try and stay there."

The sheer fact he is able to test his managerial mettle in a Merseyside derby fills the Goodison chief with pride.

He added: “Well I am in a privileged position to be manager of Everton. We have always had an uphill task because Liverpool Football Club are very strong but it is something I will always remember.

"You tend not to look at it just now too clearly because you are in it but maybe in years to come by I will look back at it. I enjoy it and coming from a city like Glasgow where you have Celtic and Rangers I understand the same with Everton and Liverpool.

"It plays a big part like all derbies in major cities but that is what attracts you to the real football cities where they tend to have good old fashioned derbies."
