Saha Switches To Number 8

Saha Switches To Number 8
Stories of the Era

Louis Saha will wear the number eight shirt at Everton next season.

The Frenchman donned the number nine jersey during the 2008/09 season, which culminated in his record-breaking goal at Wembley in the FA Cup final.

He had previously worn the same number at Manchester United before switching to Goodison Park.

Elsewhere, Dan Gosling switches from number 32 to number 19, while Seamus Coleman is number 31.

But the departure of Segundo Castillo means the number eight shirt is now available and Saha revealed he has a special preference for that particular jersey.

Saha's birthday is 8 August and this is where his affinity for the number began.

The striker told evertonfc.com: "I have always favoured the number eight jeresy throughout my career but for one reason or another it has never been available.

"When I arrived at Everton last year I wanted to take it, but Casti (Segundo Castillo) had just arrived and that wasn't possible.

"This season it is available and because I was born on the eighth day of the eighth month, it is a number I do associate with."

Saha said he had enjoyed his season at number nine, and explained that he fully appreciated his joining of a list of illustrious Everton names.

"I enjoyed wearing the famous number nine shirt and it was a great honour to be handed this when I joined the Club," he continued.

"I am aware of the huge tradition associated with the shirt and the great players that have played in it, but my personal preference is to have the number eight."

Gary BraySorry for all those who have bought the new shirt the club should offer some kind of refund, but as long as he's putting the ball in the back of the net who cares what number he has............

Mark LynchJohn Jarvis... I think if you contact the club direct then i am sure they will replace your shirt for you... this is bad timing, but maybe Saha has only just decided to take number 8? I Agree with Jamie.. maybe the Yak would be a more suitable number 9, tho i also agree with Stuart Vaughny would also be proud to wear the number 9 shirt. i think that whoever gets it, it would give them a lift and add more to their game, i would certainly rule out Jo tho, as he isn't what we would call a traditional centre forward....

Emma PurseyOh dear, I seriously hope that the club refunds people like John Jarvis who paid full price for the new shirt with Shah 9 on the back. The timing of this announcement is extremely poor, particularly given the popularity of both the player and number.
