PROGRESS MADE

by Matthew Gamble   |   Published: Saturday, 19 April 2008, 10:23

David Moyes

David Moyes insists Everton's dip in form mustn't overshadow the progress made this season.

The Toffees now face a fight for fifth place in the Premier League, with just three games remaining.

But Moyes was keen to point out that his side have excelled for the majority of the season - showing real progress over the course of the campaign.

Moyes told evertonfc.com: "I think that we’ve played well (this season) – in periods we’ve played better than we have done in the past.

"It’s a definite progression. At the moment we’re suffering from a little bit of a lack of confidence, and injuries as well."

Aston Villa are next up on Everton's fixture schedule, with the Midlands side also in the hunt for Uefa Cup qualification.

Everton then travel to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal before hosting Newcastle on the final day of the season.

Moyes added: "We have to pick ourselves back up and there’s some big games to come. And we have to win a couple of them."

i have some suggestions....now i know it would be expensive but we would recoup it all with these three additions....bentley, luke young and micah richards (or glenjohnson) three of the best young talents , all going from their respective clubs should they not be in europe , add these three to the likes of lescott, jags, baines, yobo, arteta, cahill, fernandes, pienaar, yakubu , johnson, anichebe, vaughan, osman........would definitely be top four material with just 3 players of this stature, add these three to the pitch and a fully fit squad then i think our side is a match for anyone, and i think i am being realistic saying that.

Like many of you guys, I am really nervous about whether we are going to qualify for Europe. It would be devastating if we don't as we were magificent until the first leg in the Fiorentina game. It can't be just the lack of Timmie and Mikel. Come on guys, we need a win against Villa so badly. Don't break my heart and ruin the dreams of so many of your closest supporters! COYB!!!!

The club has made massive progress this season, lets hope that we can get some more quality players in this summer to give us strength in depth. We are the best team outside of the "Big Four" but we need to be aiming for some silverwear!!!!

Just silly results like losing against Fulham and getting just a point @ home to West Ham. Okay we didn't have a good midfield (no Arteta, Cahill or even Ossie) but hope they will be available against Villa

I am afraid we won't finish fifth or even sixth, I believe we are heading for seventh and if we finish in seventh then how can if be progress! It can only be a step back, sixth again is no progess either just staying still. The only way this season can be seen as progess is by finishing fifth! Progess is moving forward and we haven't done that by finishing in the same or a lower position as last season! Not getting into europe doesn't bare thinking about! We need better players in the summer, lets not sit back and cross our fingers, hoping Carsley can still play centre midfield next season!

we have been awesome this season but unless we qualify for europe ( regarding the position we have been in all season ) then its all for nothing , we have the biggest game of the season against villa next week with a win all but garaunteeing the uefa cup so we musnt allow our heads to be down as they have been since fiorentina which i might add was the proudest day of my life , we made a very good team look rubbish unfortunately it wasnt enough but we were better than any team to wear blue in some 19 years since 89 , we must realise how good we are and put that behind us before it buries all progress we have made

I'm glad that finally we are not discussing far-fetched fantasies about nicking 4th despite losing the derby. 5th is now our main priority and I have to admit I’m not overly confident at the moment! This season we've has been phenomenal and I do believe that if we don't get 5th it is a travesty, but we can't continue with recent form and expect to finish as high as our season overall has deserved. Villa have an easier run in than us after the game on Sunday and that is why it is paramount that we come away with all three points. I think we will get Europe but everyone has seen the detrimental effect the Inter-Toto can have on a team’s season so let’s hope we can secure what we have earned with a victory this coming Sunday. In Moyes we trust! COYB

We made excellent progress up to the Fiorentina home game when we played as well as I have seen us since the 80's. After that night, we have suffered a loss of some key players and a loss of heart, confidence and form. All at the same time. I still say that offloading Faddy without a replacement was a poor decision as far as the short-term is concerned. I am worried by newspaper speculation linking us with the likes of Carr at Newcastle. I fully agree with some other posters. The pressure grows each year and for us to stay a top 4 challenger, we need the likes of Bradley and Kallstrom with a Lee Carsley top class replacement as our absolute top priority. We have a good structure to our squad. 3 class signings in our weakest positions is the absolute minimum we need to stay in the Uefa slots. Anything less will NOT count as progress as far as the fans are concerned. C'mon Billy. DM needs £25m minimum if he is to be able to compete with the other Premiership second tier clubs.

keep it up DM. lets treat these next few games as cup finals. we can't get complacent. pompey and villa are charging behind us. 2 weeks ago, we were challenging for 4th, now we're 8 pts behind "them" and three ahead of p/mouth. Lets get it done lads

Dominic Berry - Sunday 20th Apr 2008 - 02:18

we have done well but i think we may struggle next season... man city, spurs, villa, newcastle and portsmouth will all sped big, we need to spend just to keep up with them never mind break into teh top 4th... 5th may be a step too far this season too... we must beat villa
