Priceless Jag

Priceless Jag

Former Everton hero Adrian Heath has described Phil Jagielka as a ‘priceless’ asset to the Club.

Heath knows plenty about Jags from when he coached the defender at Sheffield United.

He also tried to sign him when he was at Sunderland with another former Blue, Peter Reid.

“I remember thinking on the first day Jags trained at Sheffield United that he was a kid of real promise and I told the chairman that we needed to get him on a longer contract,” Heath recalled.

“When I was at Sunderland with Reidy, we tried to sign him. He’s top class. He’s a great player and a great kid to have around the club because he will play anywhere for you.”

Jagielka arrived from Sheffield United in the summer of 2007 for a fee of £4million. Heath believes that represents excellent business for a player of the versatility and quality of the once-capped England man.

“The biggest compliment I can pay him is that he is like Alan Harper. I’m so pleased that he is doing well and I never doubted that David had invested wisely when signing him.”

“People said to me that £4m was a lot for him but I told them that Everton were getting three players for that fee. He will go on to prove that he is priceless.”

With Yakubu sidelined for the foreseeable future due to his ruptured Achilles tendon, Heath is hoping Louis Saha can step up to the mantle as the Club’s premier striker.

“I really hope Louis can stay fit,” said Heath. “He’ll be a fabulous signing if that is the case because on his day is absolutely unplayable.

“I presented Tim Cahill with his Player of the Year award at a supporters’ night a while back and I was asked which player I would like us to sign and straight away I said ’Louis Saha’.

“He could be very exciting for us. I’m just delighted that things have turned around after Sunday’s win. Like everyone, I was concerned during the summer but we look back in business now.”

Richard MurphyOsman has been brilliant ithis season in midfield. Covering from box to box. Very under rated player at Everton. May his form continue.

John GaultonHe has been outstanding this season. Where we are in the league has largely been down to him as jags has been a rock in defence.
