MOYES: OUTSTANDING

David Moyes' verdict on the game.

MOYES: OUTSTANDING

David Moyes has described the win over Portsmouth as 'an outstanding result'.

Everton returned to fourth place in the Premier League table just hours after Liverpool's win at Bolton courtesy of a 3-1 win over Pompey.

Two goals, one in each half, from Yakubu either side of a great Tim Cahill header sealed the victory for Everton.

Everton took the lead inside the first minute but then conceded a sloppy goal to Jermain Defoe and were under pressure before the arrival of Andrew Johnson from the bench and the late goals from Cahill and Yakubu.

Moyes was overjoyed with the win and the nature of the performance against a very talented Portsmouth side that boasts one of the best away records in the top flight.

Moyes said: "We were very good and we have been for most of the season and we are improving all the time. It was an outstanding result against a Portsmouth side that doesnt lose very often away.

"We got off to a fantastic start and then wasted three or four good opportunities and it came back to punish us.

"I thought it was a poor to concede and it is not the way it has been for us because the way the defenders have done in recent months has been terrific. It was a lapse in concentration."

But Everton responded in the right manner.

Moyes added: "I thought Andrew Johnson made the difference at that period in the game because they started the second half much better. We were causing them problems but without getting behind and getting shots on goal. Andy got some runs in and started to worry them."

Johnson turned provider for the third goal, producing a great cross-field ball to tee up Yakubu.

Yakubu has now netted 18 goals this term - and the manager is not surprised with his goal return.

He added: "Harry (Redknapp) will know more than anyone that he scores goals wherever he plays. But he is doing more than what he has done for his other clubs here because he is a great footballer as well. He is loved here, he is wanted and long may that continue."

Ciaran McNultyHaving followed them all my life, I can be cynical and pessimistic at times, always thinking that with the next game the bubble's going to burst. But Moyes and his team keep getting it right. I'm daring to believe.

Cathy CondronWhat a final 20 minutes! So glad that David Moyes is getting better with his tactics! I have to say i have doubted him in certain games, bringing players on too late. But against Pompey he got it just right. Andrew Johnson....what can i say! He made all the difference when he came on. We attacked, and got two more goals. Enabling us to rest Yak for Italy. AJ works so hard and im sure the England Manager was more impressed with his work rate than Defoe! AJ runs his socks off, going forward, coming back to chase their midfield. Tim Cahill back to his former self, running the legs off tt. Then theres "The Yak Attack". What a third goal. I was waiting for the midfield to come into the box when he just unhooked! Great camera work in the goal mouth. Love watching the replays of Yaks goal. Great result Everton, just keep it going till the end of the season Blues, we are going all the way! But first we want the UEFA cup in Mancky Land!
