Everton can confirm that Steven Pienaar will miss the start of the season after breaking his toe.

The injury occurred during Saturday’s friendly draw with PSV Eindhoven.

The extent of the injury was confirmed on Tuesday morning following the result of x-rays on the injured area.

Everton’s Head Physio, Mick Rathbone said: “We can confirm that Steven Pienaar has broken the big toe in his right foot."

It is a blow for the South African midfielder who returned to pre-season late after international duty during the summer.

Pienaar is expected back in contention for the end of September.

i agree this is very worrying - what do we have now? - 3 fit first team midfielders (realistically). we do need to sign good quality players and quick!!! i have faith in Moyes but surely we should have been able to attract at least 1 player!!! looks like no-one is interested. what ever happened to Manny Fernandes?

This is getting scary now. Watch this space we were told and we all are Mr Kenwright, if we lose the first 2-3 games, will we sign anyone before the window closes? Even then , will we make up the deficit?! A very worried and increasingly annoyed Evertonian.

This is getting very worrying, how do we think we are going to be able cope with the premier league, domestic cups and the UEFA Cup with such a small squad! We were suppose to be pushing on not backwards again. Get some players in or we will be a laughing stock.
