Ossie's Carlisle Thanks

Saturday's FA Cup clash sees the midfielder face his former loan side.

Ossie's Carlisle Thanks

The FA Cup clash with Carlisle United means a chance for Leon Osman to face the side he thanks for kick-starting his career.

Then aged 21, the Everton midfielder went on loan to Brunton Park in search of first-team football and enjoyed a superb spell with the Cumbrians, scoring three goals in 15 appearances.

Now 28, Ossie says he was pleased when he heard the third round draw.

"It's a nice one for me. Going there on loan helped start my career off so I've only got fond memories of the place," he told evertonfc.com.  "I was playing here for the Reserves but was told I could go to Carlisle if I wanted too.

"I went up there, met the staff, the management and the players and fell in love with the place for a short while.  It's a proper club, so to speak," he added.  "It's got great roots and a history behind it as well and it was great to be there. It was only three months but it felt like a lot longer because I was enjoying it."

Osman says the magic of last year's FA Cup run is still fresh in the minds of all the Everton players involved but he knows they can't be complacent against the League One side.

"The memories are still fresh and they are good. But we want that to happen to this Club every season. We want to go even further this season and win it," he explained.  "Each round is another step though and you have to concentrate on getting over each step as it comes.

"Carlisle will be up for the game.  Any Football League club coming to a big Premier League club is a fantastic occasion and a great day and they'll be hoping to be the giant killers of the round. We have to make sure we're strong and avoid a repeat of what happened against Oldham a few years ago."

Simon BirdseyWe haven't got a huge amount of options available for the cup game. Assuming that Saha, Vaughan, Neville and Jo are unfit to start, I'd go with something along the lines of: ------------Howard Coleman Neill Heitinga Baines --Pienaar Akpan Fellaini Bily -------------Osman --------------Agard One variation would be to bring Baxter in on the right of midfield. It would give us a very inexperienced flank though, so we'd have to bring Hibbert back in inplace of Coleman. The reshuffled side would look like this: ----------Howard Hibbert Neill Heitinga Baines -Baxter Osman Fellaini Bily ----------Pienaar ----------Agard It wouldn't surprise me if Neville and Saha started, although I'd personally prefer to rest them and give two or three of the younger players a run out. Coleman and Duffy in particular look like they're ready for the step up. Akpan looks like an Arsenal-esque player to me, very much in the mould of Song or Diaby. I'd like to see how he'd handle a cup game.
