NEV: DON'T WRITE US OFF

Nev: Don't Write Us Off

Phil Neville has warned Benfica to expect a totally different Everton in the return game.

The Portuguese outfit beat the Toffees 5-0 on Thursday and are Everton's next European visitors to Goodison Park on 5 November.

It was a severely under-strength Blues side which suffered that defeat, and Club captain Neville is confident the nature of the reverse will serve to galvanise his troops.

“The game at Goodison will be different," he declared. "You’ll see a different Everton side. I’m convinced that we can beat them.

“I think the score line tonight tells you we’ve made five mistakes. We can’t make those mistakes against the top European sides if we want to progress and win this competition which we do."

Missing eleven first teamers, Everton held their own in the first half in the Estadio da Luz, before three goals at the start of the second period condemned them to heavy defeat.

But, recalling past experiences as a Blue, Neville expects a reaction - not only in the bonfire night clash but on Sunday at the Reebok Stadium when Everton face Bolton.

“When the chips are down and our backs are to the wall and people are writing us off, that’s when this Club gels together and we will do that, I’m sure of it," he continued.

“I’m sure everyone is disappointed but we have to win Sunday now to put this result behind us. They have world class players, but I’m sure when we get them back to Goodison and we get everybody fit – because we had a really inexperienced side out there tonight and in European football you have to play with experience – it will be a different game.”

i think the problem was the defence, with to young boys and hibbert out of position we didn't really have a clue.. last year our defensive record was brilliant, and we always are a team built on defense, i just think with boys in and out at the back this summer its going to take a while to gel

Alan i quite like the idea of fellani up front. So .. maybe what would be interesting is if they had him up front with saha then cahill just behind so the formation would end up being 4-3-1-2. Also after reading the bolton 10 questions they said they have not done well at deffending set pieces so with fellani stuck in there and cahill could cause some problems for them ! COYB :D

Moyes said that they should expect a similar team when we play them next time so what's going to be different, the good old Everton passion? Because I haven't seen that for a while and last night when the senior players were required to step up and protect the youngsters what did they do? Flopped. This club needs more than tambourine bashers it needs serious footballers to do just that!

Stick Fellaini up front with Saha against Bolton so he can cause more problems with all the high balls that will be getting put in by Heitinga, and Cahill to feed off knock downs,

It was a great learning experience for Gosling, Hibbert, Coleman, Fellaini and Rodwell, I just hope they are not too downhearted from last night, but as a sign of things they need to improve to win matches against good team and become a better player in the future. Now let's concentrated on getting 3 points off Bolton and make sure we pay them back at the home-tie in 2 weeks time!

i gree phil but we need to start with 2 attackers at home as we should have against wolves and stoke! distin and yobo are accomplished players and should have shown leadership last night. we might have had an under strength team but last year we missed cahill arteta yakubu anichebe, for long periods and still had a good campaign, so why not now with the new additions to the squad?
