Neill Signs In
Everton have signed free-agent Lucas Neill on a one-year deal.
Everton have swooped to secure the services of Lucas Neill.
The Australian defender, who left West Ham United at the end of last season, has joined the Blues on a one year deal and becomes the fourth permanent addition to the squad following the summer signings of Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Sylvain Distin and John Heitinga.
Neill arrived at the Blues’ Finch Farm training complex on Thursday morning to meet David Moyes before completing the move at Goodison Park.
Neill has been handed the number 23 shirt and has been signed in time to be available for Sunday's Premier League encounter against Blackburn, one of the defender's former clubs.
David Moyes' acted swiftly to secure the services of the former-Hammers man following Phil Neville's knee ligament injury sustained at Fulham on Sunday.
Sydney-born Neill - an Australian international - has made 50 appearances for the Socceroos having previously represented his country at Under-20 and Under-23 level.
The 31-year-old, a close friend of Tim Cahill, started his career at Millwall before moving to Blackburn Rovers in 2001. He then made over 70 appearances for West Ham during his two-year spell with the east-London club.
Earlier this summer Neill reportedly turned down a one-year contract extension with Gianfranco Zola’s side.
He is allowed to join Everton with immediate effect as Premier League regulations state clubs are permitted to sign unattached players outside of the transfer window.
