Neill Signs In

Everton have signed free-agent Lucas Neill on a one-year deal.

Neill Signs In

Everton have swooped to secure the services of Lucas Neill.

The Australian defender, who left West Ham United at the end of last season, has joined the Blues on a one year deal and becomes the fourth permanent addition to the squad following the summer signings of Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Sylvain Distin and John Heitinga.

Neill arrived at the Blues’ Finch Farm training complex on Thursday morning to meet David Moyes before completing the move at Goodison Park.

Neill has been handed the number 23 shirt and has been signed in time to be available for Sunday's Premier League encounter against Blackburn, one of the defender's former clubs.

David Moyes' acted swiftly to secure the services of the former-Hammers man following Phil Neville's knee ligament injury sustained at Fulham on Sunday.

Sydney-born Neill - an Australian international - has made 50 appearances for the Socceroos having previously represented his country at Under-20 and Under-23 level.

The 31-year-old, a close friend of Tim Cahill, started his career at Millwall before moving to Blackburn Rovers in 2001. He then made over 70 appearances for West Ham during his two-year spell with the east-London club.

Earlier this summer Neill reportedly turned down a one-year contract extension with Gianfranco Zola’s side.

He is allowed to join Everton with immediate effect as Premier League regulations state clubs are permitted to sign unattached players outside of the transfer window.

Alan WoodwardNot a bad signing at all. I dont understand people thinking otherwise. Yes he has high wage demands but im sure Moyes has negotiated a good deal for all parties. With Phil Neville looking likely to be out for a while who else could we have got on a free at the moment. We have needed cover at the back for a while now and think we should all get behind the lad.

Xenophon LawI have to say I am very surprised by the loaning of a good striker in James Vaughan. However, he hasn't played for a while and he needs the minutes. With Yakubu back, Jo and Saha looking good too, maybe we don't need him at this point in time. Besides we can always re-call him when required. And good to see Lucas Neill signed. He'll be good value (just his wages) I am certain and the extra bodies will help us push for trophies. Thanks for choosing the Toffees Lucas. You're the hungry, committed type we need.

Paul Ellamregarding comments made about the club not signing players for the future - we have signed mustafi, garbutt, peterlin and arnoux - all players "for the future". not every player we sign can be 16-18 years old!!! and why all the future talk? lets get a squad together that wins things now!!!! :-)

Martin TurnerPoor, poor signing. He's a mercenary signing who has only joined us because nobody would give into his huge wage demands and he didn't want to go begging back to any of the teams he turned down. What's happened to looking to the future with our signings? Not only have we got Elstone thinking the club has spent a fortune on players this summer (the money only became available when Lescott was sold) but we are now signing over rated and over the hill palyers. I know he came on a free, but his wages would have been better keeping hold of Jacobson and Valente

joseph sageChris Trevethan, im just saying my opinion. at the end of the day if he was that good why'd it take him so long to find a club? mainly because he was being greedy looking for the biggest pay day, and he basically got laughed at by most clubs he wanted to sign with. as ive said, now that hes our player i will support him. also im a bit confused as to what moyes will be doing with johnny, i thought he bought him primaraly as a right back.

Mike ClohertyLucas Neill is a very good signing for Everton. He can play in either full back roles or central defence. In fact, it was as a central defender for Australia in the last World Cup finals that he was considered one of the best defenders playing at the World Cup. Australia reached the last sixteen and were only robbed of further progress by an incredibly poor penalty decision in the final moments against Italy, who went on to win the World Cup! Neill is a tough, uncompromising player, who gives everything. He was quickly given the captaincy of West Ham United and Zola did everything to try to keep his captain at Upton Park. Neill could have gone to Sunderland, Fulham, Atletico Madrid or a number of Turkish clubs. It is great that he has chosen to sign for Everton.

James WilkinsonI think this is a brilliant signing, especially if he has taken the massive wage cuts that is being reported, altho he is on the wrongside of 30, i still think he can offer everton a top right back and center back, he has loads of premier league experience. Well done Moyes and everton adnd bring on Blackburn

Stig Andre KarlsenA great signing!!! I must say i was a little suprised that Moyes didn´t try to sign him earlier in the pre-season. He is a player that fits Moyes work-ethic, a determined lat that has premier league experience and was captain for West Ham. And he isn´t that old. Great Moyesy!!! In Moyes we trust, In Everton we love

Lawrence SharpGreat signing ! A really good, solid player, and he's not even costing us anything ! Terrific work DM... Not entirely relevant, but still important, I was also really pleased to see Bilyaletdinov's performance last night, he looked very good value... hopefully our European form can start to carry over to our Premiership campaign quite soon. COYB !

Nathan YiangouGood deal especially on a free transfer. Main thing is he creates intense competition across 3 positions of the back four which will keep the current starters on their game. He's a hard man that will add a bit of steel. Welcome aboard Lucas

Wai Kin Lowa very experienced right back which we really needed in our team right now although gosling play quite well against athens just now. he shouldn't have problem settling in since he he played for west ham last season and there is cahill, his australian teamate.

Andrew BallingallI see someone critisised this move. Shame on him. Does he not realise that we have an international experienced full back whose had plenty experience in the premiership? The boy is solid and i think for free hes the right signing. Good job Moyes on the signing and the results against Athens

Thursday 17th September 23:25 Report Comment

John FoleyI for one think this is great news. It is faith that this has happened just as Phil Neville has got injured. he has got great experience in the premiership and will give David Moyes a nice selection headache on which way to shuffle around the team. Welcome to the peoples club Lucas and lets get three points against one of your old teams on Sunday. COYB!!!

Dan DickensonWell theres one thing you need to about Lucas Neill and thats that he rejected a move to Liverpool. A top bloke in my books. Lets hope he can do better then our last number 23 Pistone. Good Luck to Neill and lets hope you can have a good season with Everton.

Matt TuncCouldn't be happier to have you at Everton Lucas. I don't know how you ended up with us, maybe Tim got in your ear or DM always had you on his radar, whatever the reason welcome to the "peoples club", hope you have a great year and extend for a couple of more.

Thursday 17th September 21:05 Report Comment

joseph sagei had a horrible feeling all summer that this transfer would end up happening. i truly dont rate neill, hes too much of a hot head, he lacks quality going forward and the money hes rumoured to be on is down right ridiculous. off course im going to support him now that he wears our shirt but i still cant see why we never tried harder to keep jacobsen.
