David Moyes has admitted that he needs to bring in at least five new players in this year’s transfer window.
The Everton manager’s only activity so far this summer has been the permanent signing of Steven Pienaar, who was with the Blues on loan last season.
But with just over a month remaining until the window closes, Moyes knows he has a busy time ahead if he is to bring in any new additions.
The Goodison boss said: “We need to bring in five or six players and we haven’t brought in anybody yet.
“So we need to be quite busy and we can be in the coming weeks. But we will look to go right up to the end of the window like everyone else."
Tim Howard, Steven Pienaar, Victor Anichebe, Joseph Yobo and Yakubu are all set to return to training this week following international duty, but a number of injuries are affecting the manager’s preparations for this year’s Premier League campaign.
“We are missing bodies and we have injured players unavailable,” explained Moyes.
“I’ve been telling everybody this all summer that the numbers are short and we have injuries which may or not be fit for the start of the Premier League – everybody is aware of that.”
Significantly, one player who returned to action this weekend in the Toffees' friendly against Cambridge United was Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta - and Moyes was pleased to see the influential playmaker back on the pitch after a niggling abdominal injury.
He added: “It’s good to have him back but we can see he’s still got a bit to do yet.
“We thought if we got him 15 minutes today then it would be better for his recovery. We hope his problems are behind him now.”
