LUMSDEN: COLLINS WAS THE BEST
Everton coach Jimmy Lumsden has been reminiscing about his good friend Bobby Collins.
Lumsden was a team-mate of Collins at Leeds United and he has nothing but admiration and respect for the ‘wee man' who is still revered by all Evertonians.
They first got to know each other when they went through a pre-season campaign under Don Revie in the 1960s.
"One of the great things about Don was that pre-season was fantastic," Jimmy recalled.
"We'd be split into four teams and you had to do your best because you'd have the likes of Billy Bremner and Bobby Collins barking at you. Whether it was the cross-country running or the 7-a-side games, they wanted to win."
Lumsden doesn't hold back when he talks about the influence that Collins had on the Yorkshire side after joining them from Everton.
"He made Leeds United and I know that he was a big loss to Everton at the time," he said. "I would say that he was Don Revie's best ever signing because he lifted Leeds out of the Second Division and into the First.
"He then became the Footballer of the Year and led Leeds to the FA Cup final. He was a fantastic professional and a great player.
"There were four or five players in every team who did the ‘sorting out' and Bobby was certainly right up there with the best of them because he was as hard as nails. He was unbelievable.
"He was great with the younger players and he would always talk to me about Everton and he would tell me of the great players that were here. He really loves Everton and I think it was a real shock to him when they sold him."
