The People's Club
Fara Williams Ladies' Player of the Season

Ladies Continue Goal-Rush

by Paul Dargan | Monday 19 October 2009, 12:49

Everton Ladies continued their 100% start to the season after trouncing second-placed Watford 5-0 at the Arriva Stadium on Sunday.

The game was over as a contest by half-time as Mo Marley's team raced into a 4-0 lead with goals from Natasha Dowie, Emily Westwood, Jill Scott and Toni Duggan. Jody Handley added a fifth midway through the second half.

Handley was involved in the first three goals and scored the fourth herself, but last season’s runners-up took their foot off the gas and added just one more after the interval. The goals-to-minutes total is still an impressive 14 in 270 minutes of football which averages out at an astonishing rate of one roughly every 19 minutes!

It was a welcome boost for the Blues ahead of next weekend's clash away at perennial rivals Arsenal, who have also won all of their domestic league fixtures and captain Fara Williams feels it's best to play the reigning champions when they are in good form, but would like more goals.

"We're actually disappointed with our results at the moment," said Williams, "as we could be winning our games 10-0. That was the problem in the Champions League game, where we only scored twice over the two legs and for that reason we went out.

She continued: "We went in 4-0 at half-time against Watford and to only win 5-0 was not what we wanted; we should be doing the same (scoring four goals) in the second half.

"Arsenal are doing that, and we are aware that the goal difference was a factor in deciding the league last year. But it's good that the game comes early in the season, it's best to play them now when we are in good form."

The Blues have also yet to concede a goal, and England goalkeeper Rachel Brown will be happy to not be involved in the games so much - something that is also pleasing the Everton midfielder.

She added: "Rachel is probably bored in the net at the moment, because we are defending well, but more importantly, keeping the ball and creating chances ourselves."
