JOLEON: WE HAVE THE FIREPOWER
Joleon Lescott insists Everton have the firepower to cope with the loss of a host of players to the African Cup of Nations - but insists reaching double figures himself this season could be too big an ask!
The Everton defender netted his sixth goal of the campaign in Saturday's crucial 1-0 victory over Manchester City. That result moved the Toffees up to fifth, behind Liverpool on goal difference in the battle for a top four berth.
The magnitude of the result was increased by the fact David Moyes' selection options were heavily depleted by the loss of three first-team regulars to the African Cup of Nations, injuries to Andrew Johnson and Leon Osman and the ineligibility of new signing Manuel Fernandes because of delay receiving international clearance.
Lescott's 31st minute strike proved the difference and he is confident the Blues can continue bridging the gap with the top three.
He told evertonTV: "We know there is a long way to go to match the likes of Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea but we are not that far behind them now in the league. Beating Man City proves we are capable of defeating the teams around us. That was a massive game for us and we are ahead of them now.
"The gaffer did a great job in pre-season getting the players in to make sure we have the options if we lose a lot of players, which we have because of the African Cup of Nations."
Lescott is now chasing Tim Cahill and Yakubu in the Everton scoring charts - and has been challenged to reach double figures by the Goodison boss. But he is not confident of achieving that aim.
He added: "This is my best season of scoring and long may it continue. I would love to get into double figures, although I don't think that will happen now. I normally get one or two so six is fantastic, but double figures might be tough."
One player who could help provide the ammunition for Lescott is Fernandes. The defender is delighted to welcome the mercurial midfielder back to Goodison.
He added: "Manny is a great player. He is an all-round player who can get forward and defend well as well. He will be a good addition to the side."
