Johnson was winning his fifth cap, but making his first start for his country.
England began with the Everton man on the right-hand side of a three man frontline.
After the game, Steve McClaren rejected suggestions that playing Johnson out of position had hindered the striker.
"He did a fantastic job for us," said the England boss. "We wanted flexibility up front.
"He did a job for the team and that is what's most important."
Chelsea's Arjen Robben had the first real effort on goal, but Paul Robinson beat the strike away.
Then Steven Gerrard was denied by Henk Timmer when clean through.
