The striker is set to face his former boss on Saturday for the first time since leaving Old Trafford in August.
Ferguson guided the Frenchman through four injury-ravaged seasons but tipped him to bounce back with the Blues.
“A lot of it [letting Louis go] depended on whether we got Berbatov,” said Ferguson at his pre-match press conference. “We felt that we were going to get him.
“With Louis, he just didn’t give us enough football. In those situations, which we’ve had in the past, players can leave here and continue their career elsewhere and do well. We hope that Louis goes on and does that with Everton.”
United will be close to full strength for the clash with David Moyes' side.
Defenders Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand, who missed Tuesday's 3-0 win over Celtic, are back in contention, while Berbatov has shaken off a knock picked up against the Scottish giants.
Fit-again midfielder Michael Carrick is unlikely to feature.
"Tuesday’s performance against Celtic did us a lot of good," said Ferguson. "The form of the team has now come together and we’re playing some good football at both ends of the pitch. We’re defending well and our attacking impetus has improved. I’m very pleased with the form of the team.”
