DEFEAT FUELS 4TH PLACE DESIRE

DEFEAT FUELS 4TH PLACE DESIRE

Phil Neville wants the pain of the Fiorentina defeat to fuel Everton's fourth place push.

Despite the penalty shootout despair, Neville was immensely proud of his troops for their efforts in Wednesday night's 2-0 win over the Italians.

The skipper is now demanding his side put all their efforts into securing a fourth place finish in the Premier League.

He said: “We’ve learned a lot of lessons this season – and the biggest is that we want to play in European football next season.

“I think the whole club has warmed to it. Let’s bring more of these nights.

I think the whole club has warmed to it. Let’s bring more of these nights.

“Finishing fourth this season would be an absolutely astronomical achievement considering the quality of the side who want to finish in fourth place. We’re under no illusions about the size of the task, but with the spirit and the togetherness of the squad, we’re going to give it our best shot.”

Reflecting on the drama at Goodison, Neville said he believed the tie could have been over before extra time was required.

“I thought we were fantastic," he declared. "We should have won the game by four or five goals.

“There’s a lot of fighting qualities in our dressing room, but more importantly there’s a lot of quality.

“We took on the fourth best team in Italy; I’ve watched videos of them and I’ve never seen them have that many chances created against them in four videos, never mind one.

“We can be proud of the way we’ve played. I think we’ve shown we’re not too far away from bringing these type of nights here regularly.

“We’ve got quality in this squad and we need to make sure that over the next nine games we show that quality and get our just rewards at the end of the season.”

richard beckGret game boys, you had me quivering for over 2 hours!! Those Italians were playing for penalties - they knew it was the only way they could beat us. Its all part of the learning curve, and we have punched above our weight and shown we can play with the big boys. COYB !!!

DANIEL ROACHDAVID MOYES IS BUILDING A WORLD CLASS SQUAD AND DOING SO BY SPENDING WISELY.HE HAS BOUGHT ARTETA, JAGIELKA,LESCOTT,CAHILL AND HOWARD FOR LESS THAN 15 MILLION.IMAGINE WHAT THEY WOULD COST NOW! FOURTH PLACE IS WELL WITHIN OUR REACH THIS SEASON BUT IF WE DON'T GET IT I THINK WE'LL ALL STILL BE VERY PROUD OF THIS SEASONS ACHIEVMENTS.DAVID MOYES SHOULD BE GIVEN A JOB FOR LIFE.HE IS DOING A SIMILAR JOB TO WHAT FERGUSON DID AT UNITED IN HIS EARLY YEARS AND I THINK MOYES WILL BECOME A VERY SIMILAR MANAGER.

Philip JonesCrackin' effort last night, boss is a Man City fan and even he enjoyed the game and was gutted for us. Nut all this talk of 4th place? This is Everton and why not aim for 3rd? There's only five points in it, we can do it if we put in a performance like last night in every week!

Peter WebsterSo, so proud last night. That was a fantastic display. Every player, inc Tommy Gravo, was an absolute hero. Only cruel chance robbed us, everything else was spot on. Mikel's goal just took me breath away. Reading the other comments on here just shows how much that performance means to us. Imagine if we can play like that every week? What it deffo does means now though boys is no excuses for not getting that 4th spot. Play like that in the derby and it's ours for the taking. Well done lads and thanks for one of the best games I've seen in years.

Frank CarrollI walked out of Goodison last night dissapointed, but with my head held high, busting with pride at what I had just seen,a team who played their hearts out,a crowd who shouted themselves horse a manager who has put together a fantasic group of players, and a captain who ran to all the parts of the pitch to applaud the supporters of this great club at the end,...we are back big time,I get the same feeling I had back in the 80's,I was carried into Goodison by my dad 53 years ago as a 5 year old and now shout from the upper bullins...I have only ever felt a better night at this great old stadium once, and that was the famous Bayern Munich game...the only difference was the outcome....take note all you other clubs Everton are to be feared....bring on the Derby.....lead us to a great win Phil...then turn on the radio and listern to the other lot scream for the managers head AGAIN !!!...proud to be blue

p gSpot on Phil. You and the rest of the team played some fabulous stuff but it wasn't to be. The team and David Moyes have learnt a great deal this season and we just need to remember that it takes time to build a great side. We did it in the mid eighties and everyone can feel that it's happening again. Keep your chin up, you are a great captain, and lead the boys to that 4th spot.
