Billy's World Cup Dream Over

Bilyaletdinov's Russia crash out of the World Cup qualifiers.

Billy's World Cup Dream Over
Diniyar Bilyaletdinov

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov's hopes of playing in the 2010 World Cup are over after Russia crashed out losing to Slovenia on the away goals rule.

The Everton midfielder scored twice in the first leg in Moscow on Saturday to give Guus Hiddink's side real hope of making it to next summer's tournament.

But Slovenia's goal in the first leg of the qualifier plus a second leg winner from Zlatko Dedic in front of a partisan home support, saw the Russians exit the competition with the score line 2-2 on aggregate.

Bilyaletdinov's side also ended the match with just nine players on the field with Alexander Kerzhakov and Yuri Zhirkov both seeing red.

Meanwhile, John Heitinga was also in international action with the Netherlands.

The Blues midfielder played 90 minutes in the friendly with Paraguay that ended 0-0.

Ellen BarniclePoor Billy! At least he wont be injured next summer, our only positive. I am crying as an Irish Toffee after Henry robbed us by his blatent cheating and how happy he is by it and the manager being so happy to it. Glad to know there are other Irish fans here hurting just as much as I am. Every International team that has an Everton player on it. BTW, Delaney has filed a complaint for a reply although Trap says we wont get it. Upset that Ireland or Russia will not be playing, I will be wearing my heart on my sleeve for the others.

brennan finneganIts disappointing Russia are out as its good for the image of Everton when their players are seen as high profile in the World Cup. Other top players can be encouraged to come to Everton knowing top internationals play there. Now that Ireland are out Il be going for those teams with Everton stars in them. Pity Russia isnt one of them.

Michal SzymanowskiI know that Billy is disappointed [and a lot of Evertonians too] that he will not be in SA next year. But I'm not one of them. At least Billy will be well rested for next season and he won't be injured while on international duty! I don't know about you, but in the end it is a good news.

Mark ReidGo and read: The FIFA Fair Play Code for football. 9. Denounce those who attempt to discredit our sport. Do not be ashamed to stand up to anybody who you are sure is trying to make others cheat or engage in other unacceptable behaviour. It is better to expose them and have them removed before they can do any damage. It is equally dishonest to go along with a dishonest act. Do not just say no. Denounce those misguided persons who are trying to spoil our sport before they can persuade somebody else to say yes. After some of the diving incidents (our Red neighbours) and yesterdays cheating - are FIFA imposing their own codes on the game or not? Because it doesn't seem so.

Malcolm BubbQuite right Mark. Henry should apologise completely and quickly to save his reputation. No way was that ball to hand or soley the ref's responsibility. Remember our fallback, Abel Xavier - didn't he get a fairly long ban for a blatant goal line handball in the european championships? Maybe Henry should get the same.

Mark ReidAt least your not Irish and cheated by two deliberate handballs by Thierry Henry and it just wasn't to be for Russia. Shamless cheating. If any Everton player even dared to do that (something we've been the victims of plenty of times) then they may as well not bother returning to Goodison Park. Absolutely shocking cheating. What happened to fair play?

alexis leungExcellent illustration of how a more talented team lost. The "job-done" attitude after getting two up in the first match spoke for every thing. No fire in the belly.
