Arteta To Miss Six Months
Spaniard set to undergo surgery in Spain after rupturing knee ligament.
Mikel Arteta is set to undergo surgery in Spain after being ruled out of action for the rest of the season.
Scans have confirmed the Spanish playmaker ruptured his cruciate knee ligament in his right leg during Sunday's goalless draw at Newcastle - an injury which could take up to six months to heal.
Arteta suffered the damage just three minutes into Sunday's contest at St James' Park.
He was stretchered off after receiving treatment from Everton head physio Mick Rathbone and Club doctor Ian Irving and was en route back to Merseyside before the end of the first half of the Premier League encounter.
He underwent a succession of scans on his knee on Sunday night to ascertain the full extent of the injury, with the results revealing he has no chance of pulling on an Everton jersey again this term.
And it was Rathbone who had the unenviable task of breaking the bad news to Everton’s skillful midfielder.
“When he came off the pitch I spoke to Mikel and said: ‘Sorry mate, but this is a bad injury,’” Rathbone told evertonTV, “but he knew anyway. He’s not daft, he a very smart guy.
“We’re looking at him being out for about six months. We don’t want to hurry Mikel, we don’t hurry any of the players back, but we are looking at the start of next season now.
“He’s very down, but he’s a mature guy, he’s a top sportsman and he knows that one of the hazards of being a top class sportsman is that you get injured. He is somewhat philosophical and is already talking about getting back playing next season.
“So we don’t wallow in it, it’s football, it happens. We just need to get it operated on and get him back.”
Arteta is set to travel to Barcelona next week to undergo surgery on the injury and Rathbone says he is in safe hands.
“We weren’t actually waiting on the scan because we knew instantly what he had done," Rathbone said. “I said to the doctor straight away: ‘that’s a cruciate’.
"He’s going to have surgery early next week in Barcelona. We use three surgeons – the best in Britain, the best in Europe and the best in America. Clearly it suits Mikel to use the Spanish guy and he is very happy with the choice.”

Iain ToomerAll the best to you Mikel. You'll be sorely missed for the rest of this season, but we all have every faith in Misters Rodwell and Gosling to help us to lift the FA Cup and into Europe next season. Rest and recuperate (but don't forget to book your Wembly ticket) and come back to your brilliant best next season.
Wednesday 25th February 09:19 Report CommentKatie FlanaganArteta will be missed by not just the fans but the team, he is one of our only players with creativity on the ball, Also he has just got back to his best so hes most likely gutted aswell. Hopefully he wont be out any longer than 6 months, being one of our best players this season. The rest of the team just need to show were not a one man squad like the Kopites. COYB. X

Ian WilkinsonI agree with Anthony King, so gutted for him especially if we get to Wembley as it meant so much to him. The other lads must pull together and finish strong for Mikel so all the work done so far wasn't wasted. Keep your spirits up Mikel you are much loved and will be well missed. Get well soon.

Stig Andre KarlsenIt´s a shame to loose Arteta. He has been a real influence this season, and now we lack the creativity in midfield. This is the time to let Van der Meyde shine!!!!!! He has the flair and creativity that we need!! Come on Moyes, please let him play some more. In Moyes we trust, in Moyes we love.

Andy PottsOne day after the Newcastle game I am sitting at home feeling really down after Mikel's injury. This could be a defining moment in our season. Firstly - Get well soon Mikel. Secondly - I hope all the other boys will step up to the mark and bust a gut to keep the Mighty Blues in the hunt for the greatness we deserve. Thirdly - Nolan, you should be ashamed of yourself, I know you are a kopite - but that tackle was a total disgrace. All as I can say is I hope no-one ever does a tackle on you like that. I send my very best wishes to all at Everton and also all supporters!! COYB's

I love him to bits he has been my favourite player since we signed him. I hope it is not the full 6 months but don't want to rush him back. I know he will be gutted and very down in himself because he loves to play. Your are my hero Mikey please get well soon. Besos y abrazos xx

Jordan Neashamthis is terrible news. yakubu out for season now mikel our most creative midfielder. with the fa cup coming up now and our push on the top 4 or 5 in the league, it might be looking like all our hard work and fantastic team spirit might not be enough to last us through the season. we must still have hope that we can do it but i feel players like tim and phil need to rally the troops for one final push. the young kids might get more chances now though so not all bad. gosling and rodwell now are key with such a thin squad with all these injuries. our thoughts are with you mikel. speedy recovery mate!

Thomas McCartenthis is devastateing news, to have not 1 but 2 of your top players rueled out in the same season, is unbeliveable, we all wish mikel a speedy comeback, i just hope all the lads hardwork this season does,nt result in nothing, i feel the run of games we have been on lately is alot to ask from such a young threadbare squad, and we run the risk of running out of gas, especially with our mounting injuries.

GRAEME WHARTONThis injury could not have come at a worse time, the cup coming up and our final push for a champions leage spot, that has probably gone now,but we have to believe we can still make it,again lack of numbers will tell against us,We all feel for Mikel and already anticipate his return next season and wish him well, in the mean time phil needs to rally the team for a final push we deserve to finish in a European spot at the least.
