David Moyes is expecting Mikel Arteta to be passed fit in time for Sunday's game with Portsmouth.
The Spanish playmaker has missed two of the last three matches because of injury - a stomach problem preventing him lining up against Manchester City at Eastlands on Monday night.
Instead, the 25-year-old travelled to Spain for the second time in a fortnight to receive treatment on his injury.
But the Goodison chief is hopeful the double Player of the Season is not a long-term absentee. Indeed, he is optimistic Arteta will be available for the encounter with Harry Redknapp's Pompey.
He said: "I do not think it is that serious. He has been going to Spain to see someone and get some treatment.
"He might need a bit more time but I am hoping he will be back on Sunday."
Arteta is the only senior outfield player sidelined at the moment.
