Martinez: We Should Have Won

Boss disappointed only to take a point at Leicester.

Roberto Martinez said the overriding feeling in the Everton dressing room was one of disappointment after a late equaliser denied the Blues an opening-day victory over Leicester City.

The Toffees were set to get the new season off to a winning start following goals from Aiden McGeady and Steven Naismith, either side of Leonardo Ulloa’s debut strike for the hosts.

However, Chris Wood earned a point for Leicester with four minutes left.

He said: “We should have won the game and we only have ourselves to blame,” the Blues boss said. “I think we did everything we had to do in the first half – I thought we controlled the environment and everything that comes when playing against a newly-promoted side.
“We coped with things really well and did the hardest thing in taking the lead twice.

“We scored a very well-taken goal through Aiden McGeady - I think he looked bright throughout the game -  and the second is a very, very good goal with the way we combined as a team.

“Leicester’s goals, the first was very unfortunate after a deflection from a corner, and the second one, maybe we got too relaxed.”

Martinez also felt Everton should have pressed for a third goal during the second half rather than protect what they already had.

He added: “If I have a criticism from our point of view, it’s that maybe we should have gone for that third goal with a little bit more brightness rather than just controlling the game.

“I thought the tempo of the game dropped and, with four minutes to go, we didn’t show the concentration levels you need to keep a clean sheet. When you play a team like Leicester, you know they are going to come with a positive approach.”

Tom GrahamHope Roberto proves me wrong (again) but very poor second half and fresh legs should have been brought on. Jags, Diston, Stones and Lukaku not fit or sharp. Worrying with Gunners and Chelsea next up.

Casey RybackSeems to run out of steam in the second half. This Wong happen at Goodison with the crowd behind the team. Pienaar and Naismith both excellent but others looked a bit rusty. COYB!

James Yoxall"We should have won" was a comment we heard a lot last season, in the second we were not interested in trying to get a 3rd goal. If we want a top team we have got for the kill when we have the lead.
