Roberto Martinez refused to be disappointed after the 1-0 defeat to Leicester City as he described the friendly in Bangkok as another ‘good exercise’.

In humid conditions and on a sticky playing surface, the Blues were edged out at the Suphachalasai Stadium by Gary Taylor-Fletcher’s tap-in after half-time.

It was Everton’s second game of pre-season following the 2-2 draw with Tranmere Rovers in midweek.

“It was a fantastic event here in Bangkok and fantastic to see so many Everton fans,” Martinez told evertontv after the final whistle. “I thought the Thai people were very welcoming and it was a good exercise.

“It was a difficult game for both teams, to get that little bit of tempo. We tried the best we could with the humidity and overall you are looking at the amount of playing time that we had. Some of the players started to get 60 minutes and others completed 45.

“It was a difficult mental exercise. In many aspects, it’s a type of game where you have to get through much physical pain. It worked well to get some good volume and precision work and in that respect I am really happy.”

Everton had the better opportunities in the first-half as Luke Garbutt and Aiden McGeady both went close.

And Martinez felt there was very little between the two sides over the course of the 90 minutes.

He added: “It was going to be a tight game because the conditions were difficult for both teams, though I must admit the game was more open than I expected.

“We had a few opportunities to get that first goal and that was vital but overall I really liked the attitude of the young players coming in and giving a really good account of themselves.”

Eric Matthewsnot happy to hear that a team we will be playing the first game of the season we have lost too. The young players really need to prove themselves and that was a prime chance. We need to step it up.
