Report: Everton U21s 1-0 Rhyl
Kieran Dowell's goal enough to seal victory in Wales.
Everton Under-21s made it two wins from two trips to Wales as Kieran Dowell’s strike was enough to see off Rhyl.
The winger’s sweetly struck effort just before the hour mark capped a fine individual performance from the scholar who was lively throughout.
After George Green twisted and turned inside the box, he was tackled, but the ball fell kindly for Dowell who guided a powerful effort left-footed past home keeper Alex Ramsey.
Rhyl made a game of it though and struck the bar minutes after Dowell had put his side ahead, with midfielder Liam Dawson angling a free-kick onto the woodwork.
But it was the Blues who created the more opportunities and Courtney Duffus had an effort saved and Green a long range shot fly narrowly wide.
With seconds of the first half remaining, Dowell floated over a cross to the back post where Curtis Langton had ghosted in unmarked. The defender did well to connect solidly but Ramsey spread himself well and kept it out.
After the break, Unsworth began to use the rest of his travelling party but the regular changes did not curb the control Everton had on the game.
The Blues had Russell Griffiths to thank for keeping the score 1-0 when he saved spectacularly from a well-struck effort.
But from then on it was the Toffees on top and Grant could have added to the advantage but first fired straight at sub keeper Mike Askew then shot wide after fine work from Dowell.
Those misses ultimately did not matter as Unsworth’s side protected their lead and saw out the game to record their second win on Welsh soil this pre-season.
