Everton’s friendly against Leicester City on Sunday is not the first match the Club has played in Thailand.

The first-team squad jet out on Thursday to Bangkok – a city where the Toffees have appeared three times in the last 25 years.

Everton were in the country in 1989 when Graeme Sharp struck a brace during a comfortable 3-0 win over the Thailand national team. Strike partner Tony Cottee was also on target.

It was the Blues’ third successive victory of that year’s Far East pre-season tour, after the earlier 3-1 wins over Manchester United in Kobe and the Japan national team in Nagoya.

Part of Everton’s touring squad that year was Sweden international Stefan Rehn who had just been signed from Djurgarden and was the Club’s first post-war overseas player.

The Blues were again in Bangkok in 2005 as one of the four clubs participating in the Asia Trophy.

Thailand gained revenge from their loss 16 years earlier as they beat Everton at the semi-final stage on penalties following a 1-1 draw through 90 minutes.

Pichitpong Choeichiu put the hosts ahead after nine minutes with a fine drive from 25 yards. Marcus Bent then levelled just before the interval after running onto Leon Osman's through ball.

The defeat meant that Everton faced Manchester City in third-fourth place play-off – and again the Toffees were edged out on penalties after another 1-1 draw.

Everton fell behind as Andy Cole netted the opener for the Citizens before equalising through James Beattie from the spot when future Blue Sylvain Distin handled in the area.
