Trio Feature In Defeat

Jagielka, Baines & Barkley play in England's 2-1 loss to Uruguay.

Trio Feature In Defeat

Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka both played the full 90 minutes in England’s 2-1 defeat to Uruguay – a result which leaves the Three Lions’ World Cup aspirations hanging by a thread.

Luis Suarez’s brace, either side of Wayne Rooney’s tap-in, decided Thursday evening’s Group D encounter in Sao Paulo.

There was another cap for Ross Barkley who came off the bench to replace Raheem Sterling with 26 minutes left.

The defeat means England, to progress to the knockout stage, must beat Costa Rica by a convincing margin in their last group game next Tuesday and hope that Italy are victorious over both Costa Rica and Uruguay in their remaining two fixtures, the first of which takes place on Friday at 5pm [UK time].

England had started brightly with Rooney curling a free-kick narrowly wide on 10 minutes.

The former Blue then headed against the crossbar on the half-hour mark, but it was Uruguay who took the lead on 38 minutes when Suarez nodded Edinson Cavani’s cross past Joe Hart.

Rooney’s tough luck in front of goal continued shortly after the restart as he was again denied, this time by a fine save from Uruguay keeper Muslera – an opportunity that came about following a cross from Baines.

Rooney’s perseverance finally paid off a quarter of an hour before the end when he restored the nation's belief with a close-range equaliser.

But that hope was dashed when Suarez lashed home his second goal of the game to secure the precious three points with six minutes remaining.

Alec WalkerBaines was the best winger England had, made the best most accurate passes.
