Roy Hodgson said John Stones’ absence from England training today was merely a precaution.

Stones is on standby for the final 23-man party to head to Brazil but is with the squad in Portugal this week.

But he picked up a slight knee injury on Tuesday, meaning he wasn’t risked at Wednesday’s training session.

Hodgson told a press conference: “We had a slightly unfortunate incident yesterday with John Stones. He twisted his knee very slightly in training.

“It’s nothing serious and he could have trained today but we chose to leave him out because it is so early on and we don’t want to run any risks.

“In training sessions, things are always going to happen, be it a knock or a slight kick. It’s so far so good apart from John Stones, but John will train tomorrow.”

Stones will be called into the final squad for the World Cup if Phil Jones doesn’t recover in time from a shoulder injury.

And Hodgson added: “Phil Jones might be taking part in some footballing activities before the end of the week. Apart from those two, everyone is fit and well.”
