U21s Debut Joy For Garbutt
Left-back impresses in Young Lions' 3-1 win over Wales.
Luke Garbutt enjoyed a winning England Under-21s debut as the Young Lions beat Wales 3-1 in their Euro 2015 qualifier in Swansea.
The left-back impressed in his 90-minute outing at the Liberty Stadium where a hat-trick from Norwich City winger Nathan Redmond sealed a sixth straight win for Gareth Southgate’s side.
Everton’s Under-21s Player of the Season Tyias Browning was also named in the matchday squad but he was not called upon from the substitutes’ bench.
Redmond opened the scoring after 18 minutes but England’s lead was soon cancelled out by Gwion Edwards’ header.
Garbutt then came close to marking his debut with a goal, only for Wales keeper Connor Roberts to beat away his 25-yard drive.
Redmond restored England’s advantage seven minutes before half-time – a skidding shot which came about after Garbutt had made a timely interception.
The former Birmingham man completed his treble moments prior to the full-time whistle, though replays showed that his shot clipped the arm of teammate Saido Beharino on its path through to goal.
Garbutt, Browning and the rest of the England Under-21s squad will now head to France to participate in the Toulon Tournament.
The Young Lions will play four games at the competition, starting with a meeting with Qatar on Thursday.
