U17 European Championships Diary
Jonjoe Kenny can't wait to play in Wednesday's final.
Two Everton youngsters have helped England Under-17s reach the final of the European Championships.
Ryan Ledson and Jonjoe Kenny have played in all four of the Young Lions’ matches at the tournament so far – the most recent being the 2-0 semi-final win over Portugal on Sunday which booked a final showdown against Holland this Wednesday.
During their stay in Malta, the pair have been blogging for evertonfc.com - with Kenny providing the latest update from within the England camp.
It’s been a brilliant couple of days.
All the lads are made up today knowing that we have reached a European Championship final. It was a tough game against Portugal and they were one of the favourites to win the tournament. Our lads had to put a shift in and thankfully it all paid off.
At the start we were battering them and then we took our foot off the gas. They hit the bar a couple of times but we got away with it. In the second half we came out, took over and scored two goals.
When we got back to the dressing room all the lads were buzzing. We realised that we had reached the final and at 17-years-old that's a pretty big thing.
Since then I’ve had loads of messages off my mates and family. My mum and dad are all thrilled and I’m made up that I’ve been able to make them proud.
And what has made the weekend even better is Everton Under-18s beating Manchester City 1-0 to win the league.
I managed to follow the game – Ryan and I were constantly checking Twitter. When we saw that Harry [Charsley] had scored we were both celebrating like we were there! The lads have deserved it for the way they have played throughout the season.
We’ve both now got to get ourselves ready for the final on Wednesday. Today [Monday] has just been a chill out day and tomorrow it’s back to the football and focusing on Holland.
We know Holland are a strong team from when we played them in the group stage last week. They have a few good players, particularly on the wings, but we think we can get at their back four. Plus we owe them one after they beat us!
It’s our last game and we know we have to put everything into it because we have only got one chance. I’m not allowing myself to think about winning it yet, but I do know we have got a good chance because of the quality of players we have in our squad.
Finally, just a word on our coach, John Peacock, who has been really good to work with. He’s kept us all grounded and we've really enjoyed our time out here. He's been great.
All eight teams have been staying at the same hotel, so if you win you can’t always come back to the hotel and be rowdy. You have to be professional and respectful, and John has helped to keep us all calm.
Hopefully now we can finish the job on Wednesday.
