Roberto Martinez says brave Bryan Oviedo’s World Cup agony must be put into perspective.

The Costa Rican star revealed on Saturday that he would be missing this summer’s tournament after breaking his leg in January.

Oviedo had appeared to be on course for a miraculous return in time to feature in Brazil but that is now not to be the case.

But Martinez is insistent the 24-year-old can still take many positives from the way his rehabilitation is progressing.

He told evertontv: “The disappointing aspect was that he picked up a really horrific injury, but now he is recovering really, really well.

"He made us believe that he was going to make the World Cup because it was incredible, the manner in which he recovered. Now the medical department has highlighted that it's a real risk for Bryan to go and his health is at risk.”

Instead of lining up against England, Italy and Uruguay in Group D, Oviedo will instead turn his attention to returning to full fitness in time for Everton’s pre-season schedule, which begins in July.

“He’s progressing well,” Martinez continued. “It was an injury that at times takes up to 12 months to have the bones heal and after three-and-a-half months he's already doing things that he's got no right to do.

“So we're really happy with the way he's progressing, even if the World Cup is going to be a disappointment.”
