Roberto Martinez was delighted Everton were able to end his first season in charge with a stylish 2-0 victory over Hull City.

Excellently-worked team goals in each half from James McCarthy and Romelu Lukaku secured a 21st league victory of 2013/14 at the KC Stadium.

And Martinez said it was fitting that the Blues were able to bring the curtain down on their record-breaking campaign in such fashion.

“It was the perfect way to sign off the season,” Martinez told evertontv after the Toffees secured their highest points tally since 1986/87. “I thought today was a test for us, in many ways because of the high standards we have set.

“It’s been a terrific season and I don’t think this group of players know how to perform in any other way.

“They have been so professional and tremendous ambassadors for the standards we expect at Everton. For us to keep a clean sheet against a team that have been very good at home and made it difficult for us is pleasing.

“Then, if you look at the beautiful aspects of the two goals we scored, you can be very proud of this group of players. Today was a representation of all our hard work over 10 months and to take 72 points and get 15 clean sheets is a remarkable achievement.

“I would say it summarises our season – it was a real team effort. We tried to control the game, scored at the right moments and always carried a real threat.”

Martinez also confirmed that he omitted Ross Barkley and John Stones from the matchday 18 to give them a rest after playing a spate of games in a short period of time.

He continued: “They have played a lot of football recently and I thought they needed a rest. I thought there was a risk if we played them for 90 minutes and there wasn’t any need to do that. I wanted to see other players in the squad as well.”

Chris OuseyThanks Mr Martinez, my 7year old and myself have thoroughly enjoyed this season and look forward to the next european adventure.
