Garbutt Hungry For More Action
Premier League debut whets young left-back's appetite.
Luke Garbutt has described his Premier League debut as a ‘dream come true’.
Amid the disappointment of Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Southampton, one positive to come out of the trip to St Mary’s was a first top-flight appearance for the young left-back.
The 20-year-old was introduced when Leighton Baines limped from the field in the final moments.
It was a brief taste of action which has left Garbutt, who has been waiting patiently on the bench in Everton’s last nine matches, craving more.
“Obviously it’s a dream come true,” Garbutt told evertontv. “Ever since I was a kid, I aspired to play in the Premier League so I’m buzzing to make my debut. I can’t really put it into words.
“The assistant manager told me to warm up and I was thinking I might get my chance, then I got told to sit back down. But obviously I came on and it was surreal really. Hopefully it is the first of many.
“Since I have come back from Colchester, I’ve been in and around the first team for a while. I train with them every day so I am familiar with all the lads, so I have taken it in my stride.”
Garbutt’s development this season has been aided by the aforementioned loan spell with the League One club, where he made 20 appearances and scored three goals.
The England youth international also believes he has improved with the assistance of the Three Lions’ first-choice left-back, Leighton Baines.
He continued: “Obviously Bainesy is one of Europe’s best left-backs so learning from him every day is quality. I can only take on board what he does and do that when I get my chance.”
