Baines Takes Centre Stage

Leighton Baines headed a list of special guests at the latest ‘We Are Evertonians’ event on Tuesday evening.

The England left-back joined Blues coach Dennis Lawrence, Club legend Graeme Sharp and Everton’s Director of Marketing and Communications Richard Kenyon in a question and answer session in the People’s Club at Goodison Park.

In the company of the quartet were 80 lucky 2013/14 Season Ticket holders, who had been selected at random to attend the evening as a thank-you for their support to the football club.

Everton’s media and publications manager and evertonfc.com commentator Darren Griffiths hosted the event.

Baines was first at the top table and he spoke at length about his penalty prowess, revealing how it came for him to be asked to take over duties from Mikel Arteta and that he decides where he is going to place a spot-kick the day before a game.

The defender also heaped praise on the influence of Duncan Ferguson since the Scot stepped up to a first-team coaching role, as well as  revealing how Roberto Martinez has it in his locker to dish out a few stern words - when required!

Lawrence then took centre stage and he mapped out his career path from Trinidad to Goodison Park, which included trials at Bobby Robson’s Newcastle United and Sam Allardyce’s Bolton Wanderers before joining Wrexham, the first club he represented on these shores.

With the World Cup swiftly appearing on the horizon, Lawrence also recalled his experiences in Germany 2006 when Trinidad came within seven minutes of holding England to a draw.

Following a short break, Kenyon then fielded questions on topics ranging from his background in sport, the crest consultation process and Club merchandise.

Finally, Everton’s post-war leading goalscorer Sharp discussed Everton’s fortunes this season and revealed why Gareth Barry would be his shout for the Club’s Player of the Year award.

After the chat had finished, there was a raffle which saw one fan go home with the added bonus of a signed Baines shirt.
