Ross Barkley’s superb solo effort at St James’ Park last night is the talk of Wednesday’s newspapers.

The 20-year-old opened the scoring in the 3-0 victory over Newcastle United and the Daily Star compares the England international to Paul Gascoigne in its match report.

Barkley is likened to another legendary player in the Guardian, with ‘his virtuoso goal reminiscent of Diego Maradona in his pomp’, according to the paper.

And in the Liverpool Echo, Roberto Martinez has again mentioned Barkley in the same bracket as former Germany captain Michael Ballack.

The Echo also contains the post-match thoughts of John Stones who soldiered on bravely to complete the full 90 minutes after receiving a nasty cut above the eye in the first half.
