Ahead of Everton’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle United, manager Roberto Martinez has praised John Stones.

Stones has partnered Sylvain Distin at centre-half in the last four matches and in Tuesday’s issue of the Liverpool Echo, Martinez has labelled the England Under-21 international as a ‘proper Everton player’.

Also in the Echo, Martinez has been recalling the superb first-half performance in the corresponding fixture against Newcastle back in September. The Blues raced into a 3-0 lead that evening and the Spaniard wants his team to hit those heights again at St James’ Park.

Ian Snodin discusses Distin's level of consistency and Everton’s European ambitions in his column in today’s Echo.

Nationally, James McCarthy and Martinez have been speaking in the Daily Star, Daily Mirror and Daily Express about how Everton are ready to pounce should Arsenal drop any more points between now and the end of the season.

The Blues are eight points adrift of the fourth-placed Gunners but have played a game less and the two sides will face-off against each other at Goodison on April 6.
