Everton Focus On: Religion

Everton’s fixture against Swansea City on Saturday 22 March has been designated as the Blues’ Kick It Out Match Of Action and the Club are hosting a variety of matchday activities in the Fan Zone to showcase the work Everton in the Community does all year round to encourage equality and diversity across Merseyside.

In the build-up to the game, evertonfc.com will be taking an in-depth look at the work that Everton and the Club’s official charity does to encompass all six areas of diversity with today’s focus on religion.

St Luke’s Church

The Anglican Church in Walton is located between the Gwladys Street End and Goodison Road stands of Goodison Park.

As well as serving the community of the small but densely populated parish the church enjoys a good relationship with Everton Football Club. On regular match days, the church opens up two and a half hours before kick-off for supporters to come and have a cup of tea or just a sit down.

“I feel the connection between St Luke's and Everton FC is both unique and exciting,” explained Reverend Canon and St Luke’s Vicar, Dr Ellen Loudon. “Certainly my experience of meeting fans is that they don't just want the church to be there for the difficult times – they also want us for the ordinary and celebratory times.

“Ours is an ongoing story of the church and club working, living and praying together.”

The Reverend, who has been in her post since 2012, was also quick to highlight the importance of role models in the world of football and faith.

“Good role models are important in all walks of life but a Christian such as Tim Howard, who is brave enough to talk about his faith alongside his career and love of football, is a great thing for all of us,” she continued.

“Hearing him talking about the peace that his faith offers him can inspire others to feel confident to explore or talk about their faith.

“It shows us all that whatever we do faith and football is a great mix.”

Multi Faith Walk

November 2011 saw Everton Football Club support a special walk to celebrate Liverpool’s ethnic diversity.
Staff and participants from Everton in the Community joined individuals from the south of the city as they visited a Methodist church, Mosque and Synagogue to promote community cohesion.

The event was organised by Merseyside Police as part of ‘Inter Faith Week’, which aims to strengthen relationships between religions and increase awareness of different faiths and the contribution their members make to the local community.  The special awareness week also seeks to increase understanding between people of religious and non-religious beliefs.
